How to enter into bootloader (fastboot)

Shutdown the phone completely.
Press Volume Down and Power button simultaneously to enter fastboot mode.

How to enter into recovery mode

Shutdown the phone completely
Press Volume Up and Power button simultaneously to enter the recovery (MI or Custom).

Warning: Flashing lk2nd is required, as it is a hard dependency. Without it the mainline kernel will not select the display panel (resulting in black screen on boot).

$ pmbootstrap init # choose Vendor: qcom Device codename: msm89x7
$ pmbootstrap install
$ fastboot flash boot lk2nd.img # Build lk2nd from msm8916-mainline/lk2nd repo
$ pmbootstrap flasher flash_rootfs

The bootloader in new Xiaomi devices are locked. To unlock it, you need to go to https://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html and follow the instructions as given.
